Which module do you need repaired?

Not sure which control module is causing your fault? Here is what each one does, how it typically fails, and where to start.

ECU / ECM / PCM — engine computer

The Engine Control Unit (also called ECM, or PCM when it also runs the transmission) controls fuel injection, ignition timing and emissions. Failures cause no-starts, misfires, limp mode and communication faults — often from burnt driver transistors (MOSFETs), water damage or corrupted software.

TCM / TCU — transmission control

The Transmission Control Module decides when and how the gearbox shifts. A failing TCM causes harsh or erratic shifts, a stuck gear or a transmission warning. Mechatronic TCMs (inside the gearbox) are common failure points on many European and Asian cars.

ABS / ESP module

The anti-lock braking (ABS) and stability (ESP/DSC) controller reads wheel-speed sensors and pulses the brakes. Cracked solder joints and pump-motor driver faults trigger ABS, traction and brake warning lights — usually repairable without replacing the hydraulic unit.

BCM / SAM / FRM — body electronics

Body control modules (BCM; called SAM on Mercedes-Benz and FRM/FEM/BDC on BMW) run lights, windows, wipers, locks and often the immobilizer. Water intrusion and voltage spikes are the classic causes of dead lights, stuck windows and no-start faults.

SRS / airbag control module

After a collision the airbag module stores crash data and locks itself, keeping the airbag light on. Instead of buying a new module, the crash data can be cleared and the original module reset once all deployed parts have been replaced.

Instrument cluster

Clusters fail with dead gauges, flickering displays and stepper-motor faults. Repair keeps the original mileage and coding, which avoids the programming a replacement cluster needs.
